CEMENTATION FREE, FIXED BITE BLOCK PROCEDURE – A SHORT NOTE

When a deep bite is to be corrected Bit Planes are commonly used for the same. The correction is usually done with a moderate overjet for Class I and II, Division I and II.  The process of bonding the brackets in the mandibular arch includes opening the deep bite up with the help of posterior bite planes or removable anterior and glass ionomer cement.

The usage of a fixed bite plane without cementation is a preferred alternative to others because planes or blocks have significant disadvantages comparatively. For example GIC bite blocks cause a lot of problems while chewing and cause a lot of discomfort as well. The removable posterior bite planes are of temporary nature and are bound to be broken or lost or even could be chewed by the patient. Hence, the alternative called fixed bite block procedure.

This procedure is a simple one with only a few steps and effective as well. Here is a run down the complete procedure of the same.

  • In the  beginning of the fixed bite block procedure, the band has to be placed on two specific teeth.
  • They are the 19th and the 30th. An alignate impression now needs to be taken. Do place the band in proper position for the exact impression.
  • Take a cast and place the impression in POP. After the POP sets remove the cast.
  • Use the lingual arch wire (0.9 mm). Bend it so as to adapt it lingually in the mandible.
  • Now, use another wire (0.7 mm) for the occlusal component.  Adapt it to the occlusal surface.
  • Starting from the second molar’s mid point move towards the first and the second premolars inter-dental space. Give a vertical downward here so as to adapt between the embrasure area and lingual arch’s end resting.
  • Further, the soldering of the occlusal component has to be done on the lingual arch and the lingual arch has to be done onto the band.
  • The next step involves application of separating media on posterior teeth’s occlusal surface. This is followed by formation of an acrylic bite.

Now, remove the cast and cement the band on the teeth.

Set it as per the correction that is required. Next, with the help of a cutter, cut the occlusal component near the solder point and remove the block.
Finally, the Fixed Bite block procedure is complete.
